About

Sharon Klinkenberg is a senior lecturer at the Psychology department at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His work at the psychometric division includes implementing CAT procedures in web gaming environments, teaching the bachelor course scientific and statistical reasoning, and researching on the fly item calibration methods. His areas of interest include psychometric methods, IRT and CAT, web development, computer gaming and motivation.

Current Research

My Research at the department of psychology focuses on integrating computer adaptive testing into game-based online learning environments. One of the main projects I'm working on is the development of the Math garden (www.rekentuin.nl). The Math garden is a challenging web environment for children to practice arithmetic skills. It consists of a web-based computer-adaptive monitoring system, which tracks both accuracy and response time. Using a new model based on the Elo (1978) rating system and an explicit scoring rule, estimates of ability level and item difficulty are updated every trial. Items are sampled with a mean success probability of .75, making the tasks challenging yet not too difficult.
